Tips that make a real
difference at home

Practical, proven tips from Ms. Mary on reading, writing, routines, and raising confident learners. No jargon — just what actually works.

Reading Intervention

Help your child fall in love
with reading

These are the exact strategies Ms. Mary uses at the hub and recommends to every parent.

01

Reading · Ages 3–8

Read Aloud Every Day

Reading aloud is one of the single most powerful things you can do for a child's literacy. It builds vocabulary, comprehension, and most importantly — a love of stories. Even 10 minutes a day makes a lasting difference.

1
Pick a book slightly above your child's reading level
2
Make it cosy — same time, same spot each day
3
Use voices, pause, and ask "what do you think happens next?"
4
Let them choose the book sometimes

02

Reading · All Ages

Build a Home Library — Any Size

Children who grow up surrounded by books read more — regardless of how many books there are. Even a shelf with 10 well-chosen books creates a "reading environment" in the home that shapes a child's identity as a reader.

1
Start with 5–10 books at the child's eye level
2
Include a mix: stories, facts, Bible
3
Rotate books — visit the library if possible
4
Let the child "own" their shelf

When Your Child Struggles — 5 Signs to Watch For

Early reading difficulties are highly treatable when caught early. Here are the signs that a child may need reading intervention:

!
Avoids reading aloud or pretends to read
!
Reverses letters frequently past age 7
!
Reads slowly and loses their place often
!
Strong orally but struggles when reading independently
!
Gets frustrated or emotional around reading

Handwriting Intervention

Handwriting tips that
actually work

01

Fix the Grip First

A poor grip affects speed and stamina, not just neatness. The correct grip is the "dynamic tripod" — thumb, index, and middle finger, holding 2–3cm from the tip.

02

Start from the Correct Entry Point

Teach letters in families — c, a, d, g, q all start from the same curved stroke. Sky-writing (tracing the letter in the air first) builds the motion before the pencil touches paper.

03

Little & Often Beats Long Sessions

5–10 focused minutes daily beats one 45-minute session a week. Never force a full page — quality over quantity, every time.

Daily Routines

Routines that raise
confident learners

Morning Routine (20 min)

5 minPrayer or short devotional
5 minSpeak 3 affirmations over your child
5 minReview what they'll learn today
5 minSend them off with enthusiasm

After-School Routine (45 min)

10 minSnack + free time to decompress
20 minHomework (while you're nearby)
10 minRead aloud together
5 minTalk about their day — no screens

Weekend Reading Habit

30 minIndependent reading (no interruptions)
10 minTell me 3 things about your book
5 minDraw a character or favourite scene

For Teachers: Classroom Tips

Start every lesson with 2–3 praise affirmations
Use activity-based teaching — not just talking
Call every child by name at least once each lesson
End class with "what did I learn today?"
Annual Event

World Read Aloud Day

Every February, D'Marie Vivre Learning Hub joins the global celebration of reading aloud as one of the most powerful literacy tools available to parents, teachers, and children everywhere.

Reading aloud is not just for young children. It builds comprehension, expands vocabulary, develops a sense of story, and — most importantly — it creates joyful, connected moments between children and the adults who love them.

Join the Campaign

Why it matters

Children who are read to regularly arrive at school with a vocabulary up to 3 years ahead of peers who are not. The impact is measurable — and it starts at home.
